Māori Definition
Pronunciation: MAH-ree-koh
In te reo Māori, Mariko is defined as:
- Unreal, Phantom, Illusory (modifier) — Symbolizing concepts that are present yet intangible, influencing the physical world while remaining unseen.
This reflects the idea of invisible yet powerful networks, data, connections, and guardianship that exist in the background, subtly influencing and protecting the physical environment.
Much like mycelium, the underground fungal networks that connect and nourish entire forests, Mariko EarthGrids operates as a digital mycelium, an unseen web that binds communities, data, and environments together.
It mirrors the natural world’s way of sharing resources and information through vast, resilient networks.
The Mariko EarthGrids logo is a visual representation of a global network designed to empower communities through data collection, resilience, and environmental stewardship. Inspired by mycelium networks, the logo reflects the harmonious integration of technology, nature, and indigenous knowledge systems.
🌱 The Tree and Nodes
The tree above the word ‘MARIKO’ symbolizes the Mariko EarthGrids network, with its branches extending outward and crowned with nodes. These nodes represent individual sensors spread across the landscape, gathering real-time, ground-truthing data essential for AI training, climate prediction models, disaster resilience, and community empowerment.
Each node is like a sensor on a bridge, hill, home, or carried by a person, feeding critical information into the network. These nodes are not only collectors of data but also connectors of people, allowing communities to monitor, understand, and adapt to their environments.
🧬 The Roots
The roots below the tree mirror the branching structure of mycelium, reaching deep into the whenua (land) and representing connection, knowledge, and resilience. They symbolize how Mariko EarthGrids is anchored in nature and community values, gathering data not just for commercial gain but for the well-being and safety of people living in vulnerable environments.
The roots are also a metaphor for indigenous knowledge systems, grounded in the whenua and cultural understanding of place. They draw on ancestral wisdom, just as Mariko EarthGrids draws on modern technology to understand and protect the land.
🌍 Symbolism of Connection
The logo’s design mimics a network of interconnected nodes, reminiscent of mycelium—nature’s own decentralized communication system. This structure represents how Mariko EarthGrids uses Proof of Service Issuance (PoSI) to verify sensor activity and reward communities through tradeable tokens. It’s a circular economy of data, where those who contribute to the network are rewarded and empowered.
Just as mycelium networks allow plants to communicate and support one another, Mariko EarthGrids enables communities to share knowledge, strengthen resilience, and grow sustainably.
